The Serbian Grand Slam record winner loses his opening match in Indian Wells against a lucky loser – another superstar convinces.
Novak Djokovic has already failed at the ATP Masters in Indian Wells at his opening hurdle. The record Grand Slam winner lost in the second round to the Dutchman Botic van de Zandschulp, who had slipped into the main draw as a lucky loser, with 2:6, 6:3, 1:6.
He had “no excuse for this weak performance,” said the Serb: “It doesn’t feel good to perform like this.”
Zverev already out
Carlos Alcaraz fared better: the Spaniard, who wants to become only the third player after Djokovic and Roger Federer to win three Indian Wells titles in a row, won 6-4, 6-2 against Quentin Halys of France. Alcaraz will now face Canadian Denis Shapovalov.
Alexander Zverev is already out of the important tournament in California. After a first-round bye, he lost in his second-round match.
