Back in the Premier League: Gerrard new coach at Aston Villa

Aston Villa have reached an agreement with Glasgow Rangers on a move for Steven Gerrard Gerrard will thus take up his first job as head coach in the Premier League.

For the past three years, Gerrard has been with Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers. And the 41-year-old worked successfully: last season he broke the dominance of arch-rivals Celtic and led Rangers to their first title win since 2011. Rangers are also currently top of the league.

Now he is taking up his first coaching post in the Premier League at Aston Villa. He has already worked as a coach at Liverpool FC, but at the junior level. “Aston Villa is a club with a rich history in English football and I am immensely proud to become their new head coach.”

Villa, eleventh in pre-season, are 16th in the Premier League after 11 matchdays with ten points and two points clear of the relegation places. Two days after a 1-0 defeat at Southampton FC – their fifth in a row – long-serving coach Dean Smith was forced to resign.

Gerrard played almost exclusively for Liverpool FC throughout his professional career and became a club icon with the Reds, making over 500 competitive appearances. He won the Champions League with Liverpool in 2005 and the UEFA Cup in 2001. However, he never managed to win the league title, finishing second in the Premier League three times with Liverpool. He ended his active career in 2015/16 with a season in the US MLS. Gerrard will now return to Anfield Road as coach of Aston Villa on 11 December.
