Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has returned to the Spanish league once again at the ripe old age of 37. The former FC Barcelona forward is joining newly promoted Deportivo A Coruna effective immediately.
Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang has played in four of the five major European leagues over the course of his career. In the Bundesliga (144 appearances/98 goals), the Premier League (143/69), and Ligue 1 (101/66), the still-speedy forward made over 100 appearances in each league. Now, his goal is to further improve his record in La Liga: While with FC Barcelona from January through September 2022, the Gabonese forward made a total of 18 La Liga appearances, scoring 11 goals.
In July 2026, however, Aubameyang will not return to Barcelona but will join newly promoted Deportivo A Coruna effective immediately. Aubameyang signed a two-year contract with the historic Spanish club, running through June 30, 2028. If he fulfills this contract, the former BVB striker will be a remarkable 39 years old.
But that shouldn’t stop Aubameyang from striking fear into the hearts of opposing defenses in La Liga. He impressively proved last season at Olympique Marseille that he is still a force to be reckoned with: 16 direct goal contributions in 30 Ligue 1 matches (ten goals, six assists) and seven in eight Champions League games (three goals, four assists) speak volumes.
Transfer fee goes to Marseille
Since Aubameyang would have been under contract in Marseille for another year, consistent reports in the Spanish media indicate that a transfer fee of between one and two million euros will be paid. It remains to be seen, however, whether the Depor squad will truly become competitive by the end of the transfer window. However, the newly promoted team had already signed an exciting player in Bayern Munich prospect Jonathan Asp Jensen.
A look back at last season also offers hope: Only fellow promoted team Oviedo was relegated immediately after finishing last, while the other two league newcomers, Levante (16th) and Elche (15th), managed to stay up. Deportivo will kick off its mission to avoid relegation against Elche on August 17 at 9 p.m.
