Jorge Martin underwent surgery on his collarbone after his crash in Motegi – When the MotoGP champion will return is still unclear – He will definitely miss Indonesia
Aprilia rider Jorge Martin will have to take a break due to injury after his crash in the sprint race at the Japanese Grand Prix.
The 2024 MotoGP world champion underwent successful surgery on his right collarbone on Tuesday, but an exact date for his comeback has not yet been set. The operation took place at the Hospital Universitari Dexeus in Barcelona and was performed by a team of doctors led by renowned specialist Dr. Xavier Mir.
Martin suffered a displaced fracture of his right collarbone in his accident at Motegi. He returned to Spain on Sunday after the race to undergo the procedure, which was originally scheduled for Monday but was ultimately postponed until Tuesday.
Afterwards, his team announced in an official press release: “The operation on Jorge Martin’s right collarbone was completed successfully.”
Aprilia went on to state in the release that the recovery time would be reassessed in the coming days depending on how the healing process progressed. The Spaniard will definitely miss the upcoming race weekend in Indonesia. Aprilia does not plan to use a replacement rider, as the regulations allow this. The accident occurred in the sprint race at Motegi: Martin got off to a strong start from 17th on the grid, but entered the first corner too fast and crashed. In doing so, he also took his Aprilia teammate Marco Bezzecchi out of the race.
Initial examinations at the medical center revealed a broken collarbone, which was subsequently confirmed at a nearby hospital.
On Saturday evening, Martin briefly appeared at the track, where Aprilia held a clarifying discussion with both factory riders. On Sunday, he then began his journey home to Spain to prepare for surgery.
It is not yet clear how long Martin will be out of action. However, it is certain that he will not be competing in the Indonesian Grand Prix. This is not the Spaniard’s first enforced break this season. Due to injuries sustained in the preseason and at the Qatar race, he missed a total of ten Grands Prix.
