Another blow for Halep

The organisers of the US Open also make a serious decision against former tennis world number one Simona Halep. An American woman benefits from it

This had been a foregone conclusion: In view of the provisional doping ban imposed on her, Simona Halep has been dropped from the US Open field.

As the US Tennis Association announced, Taylor Townsend (USA) will replace the two-time Grand Slam winner in the main draw of the tennis tournament starting next Monday.

Background: Halep was provisionally suspended last October after a positive doping test.

A final verdict, initially scheduled for early August and then postponed indefinitely by an independent court in London, is still pending.

The 31-year-old Romanian was found to have tested positive for the banned substance roxadustat during her participation in the US Open in August 2022.

Halep subsequently maintained her innocence, the former world number one also recently denied other allegations due to irregularities in her biological athlete passport.

“After a lot of work, experts commissioned by me found out that the traces are the result of contamination. This explains the very small amount found in my body,” Halep had explained in an interview with Tennis Majors at the end of April: “I had never heard of this substance and did not understand how it could be found in my urine. “
