Andonovski resigned as US coach, media reports say

Andonovski has resigned as US coach following the team’s exit from the World Cup round of 16, according to media reports.

Andonovski has vacated his post, according to reports including the French news agency AFP, citing a source familiar with the matter.

According to “The Athletic”, current co-coach Twila Kilgore is said to have taken over on an interim basis. Andonovski (46) was already eliminated in the round of 16 against Sweden in a penalty shootout with the favoured US team and thus earlier than ever before at a World Cup.

Title hat-trick fails

The long-time club coach had taken over as coach in 2019, the biggest success of his four-year tenure being the Tokyo Olympic bronze medal. His predecessor Jill Ellis had won the World Cup title in both 2015 and 2019, but the historic title hat-trick mission under North Macedonian Andonovski has now failed in the last World Cup tournament with star player Megan Rapinoe.

The final on Sunday will feature two European representatives, European champions England and Spain.
