Already eligible to play against Spaeri: Wiener Austria signs Eggestein

After St. Pauli recently decided not to extend Johannes Eggestein’s contract, the striker has found a new club. The 27-year-old is joining Wiener Austria.

Wiener Austria announced the signing of Johannes Eggestein on Wednesday. As the Veilchen announced in a press release, the 27-year-old striker from Germany signed a three-year contract until 2028. “I am very happy to be here in Vienna at such a big club with a long tradition like Austria,” Eggestein said in an initial reaction.

Eggestein most recently played for St. Pauli for three years and played a key role in the club’s promotion to the Bundesliga in the 2023/24 season. In the past season (four goals and six assists in 29 competitive games), the striker was a regular starter until the spring, but his contract with the north German club was not renewed. In total, Eggestein played 85 games for St. Pauli over the past three years, scoring 20 goals.

Austria prepares for potential departures

“We have been in close contact over the past few weeks and he is Stephan Helm’s dream signing, not only in terms of his sporting abilities but also as a person who fits perfectly into our group. Jojo is at a great age, has proven his footballing qualities in the German Bundesliga, among other places, and is a very intelligent player who can cover several positions in attack,” explained Austria’s sporting director Manuel Ortlechner.

With Eggestein’s signing, the Violets are immediately preparing for the potential departures of Dominik Fritz and Maurice Malone. As Austria officials have repeatedly emphasized recently, both offensive players have attracted interest from numerous clubs.

Eggestein, who is familiar with the Austrian Bundesliga from his time at LASK (2020/21), is already eligible to play in the second Conference League qualifying round against Spaeri Tiflis. Austria will first face the Georgian cup winners at home on Thursday before traveling to Georgia for the second leg a week later (July 31, 6 p.m.).
