Alcaraz plays for next title

World number one Carlos Alcaraz is also playing for the title in Tokyo – as he has done in every tournament since April.

World number one Carlos Alcaraz continued his impressive run of finals at the ATP tournament in Tokyo. The Spaniard reached his ninth consecutive final at the Olympic tennis stadium of the 2021 Summer Games. After defeating Norway’s Casper Ruud 3-6, 6-3, 6-4, Alcaraz will play Taylor Fritz (USA) for his eighth title of the season.

Only Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer (17 each) have reached more consecutive finals in the history of the ATP Tour (since 1990), while Rafael Nadal last achieved ten finals in a season in 2017. This year, Alcaraz has already triumphed at the US Open, in Cincinnati, at London’s Queen’s Club, at the French Open, in Rome, Monte Carlo, and Rotterdam.

Alcaraz started his series of finals at the clay court Masters in Monte Carlo and has since lost only two matches in singles tournaments: in the final in Barcelona against Denmark’s Holger Rune and in the final at Wimbledon against his great rival Jannik Sinner (Italy).

On Tuesday against Fritz, who defeated his compatriot Jenson Brooksby 6-4, 6-3 in the semifinals, Alcaraz is the clear favorite in Tokyo—even though he recently lost in straight sets to the world number five at the Laver Cup invitational tournament in San Francisco.
