Alcaraz knocks out Zverev’s conqueror

Alcaraz could now face a duel with dominant player Jannik Sinner in the final.

Tennis star Carlos Alcaraz is aiming for his third title of the season at the ATP Masters in Rome. The Spaniard, who will jump back past Alexander Zverev into second place in the world rankings on Monday, defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Musetti 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) to reach the final at the Foro Italico for the first time. Musetti had knocked out Germany’s number one Zverev in the quarterfinals.

Rome could now host a dream final between Alcaraz and tour dominator Jannik Sinner. The South Tyrolean, who is making his comeback in the Italian capital after a three-month doping ban, will face US American Tommy Paul in the second semi-final this evening.

Alcaraz has already won the hard court tournament in Rotterdam and the clay court Masters in Monte Carlo this year, and he is also in top form in Rome shortly before the start of the French Open (May 25). The 22-year-old will start as defending champion in Paris.

Alcaraz secured the first set against Musetti with ease after an early break. In the second set, the local hero put up more resistance, saving a match point at 5-6, but ultimately had to admit defeat in the tiebreak.
