The Spaniard confirms his top form—and reaches the quarterfinals in New York for the fourth time.
Spain’s tennis star Carlos Alcaraz has once again underlined his title ambitions at the US Open. The French Open champion won his fourth match in New York without dropping a set, advancing to the quarterfinals with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-3, 6-4 victory over France’s Arthur Rinderknech. There, the world number two will face 20th-seeded Czech Jiri Lehecka.
For Alcaraz, this is his fourth quarterfinal appearance in his fifth appearance at Flushing Meadows. “My style of tennis just fits very well with the energy here in New York. I just love it,” said the 22-year-old, who won his first of now five Grand Slam titles in the Big Apple in 2022.
Against the powerful server Rinderknech, who knocked out Germany’s top star Alexander Zverev in the first round of Wimbledon around two months ago, Alcaraz showed better tennis and stronger nerves in the tiebreak of the first set. The Spaniard then didn’t let anything slip, thanks in part to some spectacular shots, and didn’t concede a single break in the entire match.
Alcaraz was surprisingly eliminated in the second round in New York in 2024, but this year the Cincinnati champion has been in top form so far. This season, Alcaraz won the French Open title in an epic final against Jannik Sinner, but lost to his Italian rival in the Wimbledon final. A victory in New York would see him replace Sinner at the top of the world rankings.
