Partnering with Serena Williams, Carlos Alcaraz won his opening match in the US Open mixed doubles competition after more than four months on the sidelines due to injury.
Professional tennis player Carlos Alcaraz celebrated a successful comeback just a few days before the start of the singles competitions at the US Open.
In the opening round of the mixed doubles competition, the 23-year-old Spaniard, paired with 23-time Grand Slam champion Serena Williams (44), defeated the duo of Erin Routcliffe and Lloyd Glasspool (New Zealand/Great Britain) 5-3, 4-1. “I was out for four and a half months. She made it easy for me; I just enjoyed it so much,” he said.
Alcaraz back on the court for the first time since April
Alcaraz, a seven-time Grand Slam singles champion, returned to the court at Flushing Meadows for the first time since April 14 following a wrist injury.
In the singles competition, the world No. 3 is the defending champion; in the tournament beginning Sunday, he is seeded second behind Alexander Zverev. World No. 1 Jannik Sinner (Italy) has withdrawn from the tournament due to injury.
Williams: “A Very Special Moment”
Williams had returned to the tour in June after retiring from professional tennis in 2022. “I never thought I’d ever return to this court. This is just a very special moment,” she said after the match at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.
Unlike at Wimbledon, however, Williams did not receive a wild card for the singles competition.
