After the outbreak of war: US basketball player Evans moves to Ulm

After the injury-related absence of ex-NBA player Cristiano Felicio, Ulm has strengthened itself at the position of the centre. Sean Evans comes from the Ukrainian top club BC Prometey Kamianske.

After the season was cut short in Ukraine as a result of the Russian attack, centre Sean Evans has moved to Basketball Bundesliga club ratiopharm Ulm. The 33-year-old US-American last played for the Ukrainian league leader and Champions League participant BC Prometey Kamianske, as the Ulm team announced on Monday. According to the club, Evans had initially travelled to Athens after the outbreak of war with the hope of finding a new club.

The Ulm club also reacted with the signing to the absence of former NBA professional Cristiano Felicio from Brazil due to injury. Evans, who used to play for Göttingen, is not eligible to play in the international Eurocup due to the expired transfer deadline.

At 33 years of age, the 2.03-metre tall US-American does not quite fit the Ulm philosophy, but with his experience and the young centres Philipp Herkenhof and Nicolas Bretzel (both 22 years old), he should be able to compensate for Felicio’s absence. Sports director Thorsten Leibenath commented on the new addition on the club’s website: “The need to strengthen the team in rebounding and defensive presence was there after Cris’ injury.” With Sean, they have signed a very experienced player, he said. “He will need little time to get used to the team,” Leibenath is sure.
