What has been on the cards for weeks is now official. Marko Arnautovic has announced his departure from Inter Milan. It is still unclear where Austria’s record international will end up.
Marko Arnautovic will not be extending his contract with Inter Milan. “I will be leaving Inter as a free agent. I will no longer be part of their squad,” Austria’s record international (124 caps) is quoted as saying. Transfer expert Fabrizio Romano was the first to report on the move.
The 36-year-old’s contract expires on June 30. It is still unclear where Arnautovic will continue his career. There is speculation that he could move to Saudi Arabia, but Red Star Belgrade also seems to be an option due to his Serbian roots.
End of his national team career after the World Cup
Arnautovic only played in 18 of the 38 Serie A games last season, scoring four goals and providing two assists. Particularly painful: with Inter, the Vienna-born player not only narrowly missed out on the league title, but also had to concede a 5-0 defeat to PSG in the Champions League final, where he did not play.
Arnautovic made headlines after Germany’s successful World Cup opener against Romania on Saturday when he announced that he would end his international career after next year’s World Cup at the latest.
Arnautovic has played for several clubs during his career, including Werder Bremen in the Bundesliga between 2010 and 2013. In 72 Bundesliga matches, he scored 14 goals and set up ten more. With Inter, he won the Italian championship in 2010 and 2024, and in 2023 he also won the Italian Super Cup with the Nerazzurri.
