After leaving Formula 1 at Cadillac, Mick Schumacher is apparently already looking for alternatives: on October 13, the German will complete an IndyCar test.
The son of record Formula 1 world champion Michael Schumacher will drive a Dallara DW12 from Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing, the team of three-time IndyCar champion and Indy 500 winner Bobby Rahal. “I’m really looking forward to completing my first IndyCar test,” says Schumacher. “A big thank you to the Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing team for giving me this opportunity. The same goes for driving this car for the first time at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, a racetrack with a great history where my father has already driven.”
“I’m curious to see what special features it has to offer,” adds Schumacher, who was already a guest at the Indy 500 in May this year. If the IndyCar test in October is successful, a move to America for the German cannot be ruled out.
Mick Schumacher: Possible move to the IndyCar series?
“I am very curious to understand the special features and characteristics of this race car, which is different from the cars I am used to driving, but still similar, and I remain very interested in gaining experience in the diverse world of motorsports,” Schumacher emphasizes.
“It’s great to be able to see what it’s all about and how difficult it is, as I hear a lot about how physically demanding it is. It’s no secret that I’m a big fan of formula racing, so this first IndyCar test will be an experience I will cherish, and I’m really looking forward to driving a car where I can see my wheels.”
The connection to Rahal Letterman Lanigan came about through Schumacher’s manager Dirk Müller, among others, who had competed for the team in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in the past and even won the GT2 title with BMW alongside Joey Hand in the 2011 season.
Will Schumacher take a break from the World Endurance Championship in 2026?
“I’ve followed Mick’s career from afar, as well as his father’s, so the thought of seeing him in one of our race cars is very exciting,” says Bobby Rahal. “I think it will be a great day for RLL and also for Mick, because he’s getting his first experience in an IndyCar.”
“Obviously, he has a lot of talent, and since we had pretty good setups for the IMS road course, that should give him a good foundation to start from.” If Schumacher does decide to switch to the American IndyCar series, he would take a break from the World Endurance Championship (WEC).
The German was recently linked with a move to McLaren, and because the British team will not enter with its own LMDh car until 2027, there would still be enough time next year to compete in the IndyCar series …
