After BVB farewell: Witsel moves to Atletico

Axel Witsel (33) continues his career in Spain. The former BVB professional will play for Atletico Madrid in the future.

The Rojiblancos announced on Wednesday that the club and the player have agreed on a one-year contract. According to media reports, the deal will also include an option for another year. Witsel’s contract with Borussia Dortmund had expired on 30 June, so he will not cost the Madrilenians any transfer fee. He played a total of 104 Bundesliga games (ten goals) for BVB between 2018 and 2022 and won the DFB-Pokal in 2021.

“I am proud to be part of this club steeped in history and look forward to the challenge with Atleti,” Witsel wrote on his official Twitter account. “I can’t wait to meet my new teammates and coaches and wear the colours of this great club.”

After stints at Standard Liege, Benfica Lisbon, Zenit St Petersburg, Tianjin Tianhai and BVB, Witsel is now getting to know the sixth professional league in the sixth country. A move to Olympique Marseille was also on the cards, but Witsel opted for Atletico – and is now an option for Diego Simeone’s midfield.
