After a mixed start: Fulham extend deal with “genius” Silva

Fulham FC has done nails with heads the day after the 0-2 defeat at Tottenham. The contract of coach Marco Silva (46) was extended early until June 30, 2026

Fulham have taken eleven points from nine league games so far, scoring just eight goals and conceding 15. One can confidently speak of a mixed start to the season for the Cottagers. In the darned second year after their Premier League return, coach Marco Silva’s team has so far only won against promoted Sheffield United (3:1) and Luton Town (1:0), as well as cellar-dwellers Everton (1:0).

And yet, the day after the 2-0 loss to leaders Tottenham Hotspur, the club is fully behind its coach. There is just one word emblazoned in capital letters on the widely circulated social media statement: “Genius.” Silva has already been sung about as a “genius” by fans since 2021 in a song composed especially for him.

He took over Fulham in July 2021 and led them to the Championship in his first season. As a promoted player, Silva scored a strong 52 points last season and finished tenth.

Owner Shahid Khan speaks highly of the Portuguese after signing his contract on Tuesday: “When I first met Marco in 2021, I knew he embodied everything we needed from our next head coach – and more.”

The 73-year-old, whose fortune is estimated at $11.7 billion, said he was “grateful that Marco, like me, believed in what was possible here at Fulham.” Son Tony Khan, who heads operations at Fulham, also raves about Silva: “I’m a great admirer of him, his work ethic, his professionalism and his hunger for success. “

52 wins in 105 games – “Job not yet finished “

Fulham won 52 of the 105 competitive games under Silva’s management and contract talks had been ongoing for a while as Silva reveals. “It’s always a good sign when both parties are happy and want to continue working together. I feel that my job here is not finished yet.”

His good relationship with the club’s owners has been an “important basis for the success of the last two seasons.” The 46-year-old, who this summer lost top scorer Aleksandar Mitrovic to Saudi Arabian club Al-Hilal, among others, believes in a “long journey” that may not even have to end in 2026.
