After a fall: NBA icon Abdul-Jabbar undergoes surgery on a broken hip

Former world-class basketball player and top scorer in the NBA until 2022, Kareem Abdul-Jabbar, has been injured in a fall and has undergone surgery.

Abdul-Jabbar has been hospitalized and undergone surgery after a fall at a concert in Los Angeles. The 76-year-old, who lost his status as the all-time leading scorer in NBA history (38,387 points) to LeBron James in February, broke his hip in the accident. This was announced by his longtime business partner Deborah Morales on Saturday.

“We are all very grateful for the support Kareem received, especially from the Los Angeles Fire Department, who assisted Kareem on the scene, and from the amazing medical team and doctors at UCLA Hospital,” the statement read.

20 seasons and six championship titles

Abdul-Jabbar played 20 seasons in the NBA – for the Milwaukee Bucks and the Los Angeles Lakers – won the championship six times, was MVP six times and has long been a member of the Hall of Fame.

He has had frequent health problems in recent years. In 2009, he announced that he was suffering from a rare form of leukemia. In 2015, he underwent quadruple bypass surgery as a result of a heart condition.
