The big trade of the NBA offseason is official. The Milwaukee Bucks traded superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo to the Miami Heat just hours before the NBA Draft, ushering in a new era for the franchise.
The speculation of the past few months has come to an end: Giannis Antetokounmpo will not continue his career with the Milwaukee Bucks. As multiple U.S. media outlets are reporting, the Bucks have traded the two-time MVP to the Miami Heat shortly before the NBA Draft.
This marks the end of an era in Milwaukee. Antetokounmpo has played exclusively for the Bucks since the 2013 NBA Draft, developing into one of the best players of his generation. The Greek star was named MVP twice, and in 2021, he also led the franchise to its first championship in 50 years.
Trade rumors had recently gained significant momentum
In recent days, indications of an impending deal had continued to mount. Several insiders, including ESPN reporter Shams Charania and NBA expert Marc Stein, recently reported in unison that a decision would be made before the draft.
Several teams had recently been touted as the most likely candidates. Ultimately, the choice fell on Miami, which, according to ESPN, prevailed in the race for the superstar.
Here’s the package the Bucks are receiving
In addition to their franchise icon Antetokounmpo, the Bucks are also trading Bobby Portis to Florida and, in return, will receive Tyler Herro, Kel’el Ware, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kasparas Jakucionis, three first-round picks (including the No. 13 pick in Tuesday’s NBA Draft), a pick swap, and a second-round pick from the Heat, according to ESPN. The Heat, in turn, are sending first-round picks for 2031 and 2033, as well as the No. 13 pick, a pick swap for 2030, and a second-round pick for 2033 to Milwaukee.
It was likely particularly important for Milwaukee to acquire not only draft capital but also players who can contribute immediately. The franchise had recently signaled on multiple occasions that it intended to embark on a comprehensive rebuild following the disappointments of recent years.
New Title Chance for Giannis
For Antetokounmpo, the move opens up another opportunity to contend for a title. After several years plagued by injuries and missing the last few playoffs, a change of scenery had recently seemed increasingly likely.
The 31-year-old leaves Milwaukee as an undisputed franchise legend. In 13 seasons, he earned ten All-Star nominations, nine All-NBA selections, two MVP titles, and was named Finals MVP once.
