AC Milan vs. Roma preview: Can Eusebio di Francesco make it four in a row at San Siro?

AC Milan struggled against top-tier teams last season (W2, D2, L6) and last weekend’s visit to Naples showed us why. Gattuso’s men held a 2-0 lead, only to let it all slip to result in a 3-2 loss to Napoli. The manager, who was notorious for his bursts of anger during his playing career, was evidently upset at his team’s mental weakness following the second-half breakdown.

“We have to stay in the game, we need to improve the interpretation. We looked like a team for 60 minutes. We cannot allow ourselves to leave the pitch on a mental level. We need to stay on the pitch for 95 minutes, not disappear in times of difficulty.”

The Rossoneri welcome an equally difficult opponent at 20:30 CET tonight. The game will be played at San Siro, a venue that Roma have conquered in their previous three visits.

The Giallorossi have had a heart-stopping start to the campaign. Edin Dzeko scored a late winner in the first game at Torino and then Kostas Manolas equalized late again in Roma’s 3-3 comeback draw versus Atalanta at Stadio Olimpico. Eusebio di Francesco was so frustrated during the match that he punched the bench’s protective glass, breaking a bone in his hand in the process.

Roma lost just once and conceded a league-low nine goals on the road last season. However, at least two goals have been scored in five straight head to head matches at San Siro, with an average of 3.6 goals per contest.

Roma is the better and more complete team overall, so betting on a draw or Roma to win is advisable.

Alessandro Florenzi

Alessandro Florenzi injured his knee 13 minutes after scoring Roma’s second goal on Monday and will miss the trip to Milan. Depending on the tactics di Francesco’s chooses, he could be replaced in the starting lineup by either right back Rick Karsdorp or one of the wingers Patrick Schick and Justin Kluivert.

Gennaro Gattuso admitted he made a mistake by withdrawing Lucas Biglia and introducing Tiemoue Bakayoko when AC Milan was leading 2-1, a substitution which certainly contributed to Napoli’s comeback.

It might take some time for Bakayoko to earn Gattuso’s trust. Summer arrival Samu Castillejo is still waiting for his Serie A debut.
