AC Ajaccio – Paris FC preview: A clash between Paris and Corsica is never simple

AC Ajaccio, the first Corsican club to play in France’s top division, most recently played in Ligue 1 in the 2013–14 season, when they were relegated after three seasons in the top flight. They almost secured a return last season, when they finished third but lost in the promotion playoff to Toulouse. Olivier Pantaloni’s team started the new season slowly, with only one win from six matches played. AC Ajaccio will be looking to stop their four-game winless streak against the club they beat last – Paris FC.

Paris FC last played in Ligue 1 in the 1978–79 season. The club gained promotion to Ligue 2 in 2014/15, only to be relegated the following season. Then, Paris FC made the playoff/relegation final against US Orleans in 2016/17 but lost the two-legged game on aggregate. However, they were administratively promoted to Ligue 2 after SC Bastia, Ajaccio’s Corsican rivals were demoted to the third division due to for financial irregularities. At one point last season, Paris FC occupied the promotion places, but eventually finished 8th.

There are seven meetings between these two sides on record. The last one came on August 14, when AC Ajaccio eliminated Paris FC from Coupe de France on penalties. Three of those seven encounters have ended in goalless draws (if you include the cup tie).

AC Ajaccio – Paris FC Prediction

Paris FC will be looking to avenge the cup exit, but it won’t be easy, as the Corsicans are always extra motivated against teams from France’s capital. Expect a tense contest in an eventual draw. Red cards and last-minute goals are also a possibility.
