Aberdeen fan throws seat and hits his own player

A fan of FC Aberdeen caused a scandal in the Scottish Premiership by throwing a seat.

The action hit Dons defender Jack MacKenzie, who suffered a head injury. Aberdeen had previously lost 1-2 to Dundee United on the last day of the season and slipped behind their opponents into fifth place.

Home fans stormed the pitch after the final whistle and provoked the traveling Aberdeen fans. The seat shell was probably intended to fly in their direction, but hit substitute MacKenzie instead. “This is unacceptable and must not happen,” said Aberdeen team manager Jimmy Thelin. “We need to get all the facts about what actually happened. All we know is that Jack suffered a really bad injury as a player doing his job. Something like this must not happen.”

MacKenzie was treated on the pitch and given a bandage that was stained red with blood. According to the BBC, the police launched an appeal for witnesses and asked for video footage to be made available. Ironically, the throw came from the Fair Play Stand.

Only a limited number of Aberdeen fans were allowed into Dundee after objects were thrown at United coach Jim Goodwin during the previous match between the two clubs. “I left the pitch as quickly as possible because we were already having problems with the Aberdeen fans,” Goodwin said on Saturday.
