West Ham United have a new manager. Scott Parker, a former professional for the Hammers, takes charge of the English second-tier side, succeeding Nuno Espirito Santo.

On Tuesday, West Ham United reacted to their second consecutive home defeat in the Championship, with former manager Nuno Espírito Santo being shown the door. The Portuguese manager had survived the Hammers’ relegation in the summer, but with the club currently eighth in the Championship, the board felt that their goal of immediate promotion was under threat.

The search for a successor did not take long. Just one day after parting ways with Espírito Santo, Scott Parker has taken over as head coach and signed a contract running until the summer of 2029. The 46-year-old London-born manager will make his debut as early as Wednesday evening, when West Ham play away at Cardiff City at 8.45 pm.

Parker will be supported by the existing assistant managers Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville and Billy Lepine. Club legend Mark Noble is also set to work closely with his former team-mate. “Further details regarding the final composition of Parker’s coaching staff will be announced in due course,” the Hammers stated.

“It’s a tough league – there’s absolutely no denying that”

Parker knows the club inside out; between 2007 and 2011, the former midfielder made 129 appearances for the East London side, during which time he also captained the team. His coaching career took him first to Fulham, followed by spells at Bournemouth, Club Brugge and Burnley. Parker previously secured promotion to the Premier League with all three English clubs, although he was immediately relegated again with Burnley that summer.

“I’ve been in this league three times before and managed to get out of it three times. It’s a tough league – there’s absolutely no denying that. And I’ll draw on every ounce of my experience and every ounce of my knowledge to understand what we need to achieve consistency,” Parker is quoted as saying in a club statement.
