The Philadelphia 76ers are apparently looking to land a superstar in the summer and could put together a package involving Paul George and their third pick in the upcoming draft.
This is according to ESPN’s Jonathan Givony. According to the report, the Sixers are primarily eyeing Kevin Durant and Lauri Markkanen as possible offseason additions.
However, Durant is only under contract for the upcoming season ($54.7 million) and will become an unrestricted free agent the following summer. Nevertheless, it is considered a certainty within the league that Phoenix will trade Durant after missing the playoffs in disappointing fashion.
Markkanen’s future, on the other hand, is more secure. The 27-year-old’s new contract does not take effect until the new season, guaranteeing him four years under contract ($195.8 million).
George disappoints so far in Philadelphia
George has had a disappointing first season in Philly, scoring fewer points (16.2) than he has since his sophomore season. However, the 34-year-old still earns over $50 million a year over the next few seasons and has two years left on his contract before he holds a player option in 2027/28.
What is interesting for potential trade partners, however, is the No. 3 pick in the upcoming draft. This will almost certainly be Ace Bailey (Rutgers). The 18-year-old is a huge talent and could develop into a star in the NBA with his attributes (6’10”, strong shot).
