Colon, a Puerto Rican, suffered a brain hemorrhage after a fight in 2015 and had been in a vegetative state ever since.
Former professional boxer Prichard Colon has died at the age of 33, eleven years after a fateful fight. His father, Richard Colon, confirmed this in a social media post. The Puerto Rican had suffered a brain hemorrhage in 2015 following his fight against Terrell Williams. During the bout, Colon had complained of repeated blows to the back of his head.
After undergoing surgery to reduce swelling in his brain, Colon was initially placed in a coma for 221 days. He subsequently lived in a vegetative state until his death, unable to walk or speak and requiring round-the-clock care.
Colon Suffered Brain Hemorrhage After Fight
“It is with deep regret that I must inform you of my son Prichard’s passing from this earthly world,” his father wrote on Facebook. “He is now in a better place. I did everything I could to fulfill his wish—his dream—of taking him on vacation to Puerto Rico, as he had so dearly desired, but it could not be realized. Thank you for so many years of love and prayers. Please keep us in your prayers as best you can.”
Colon was considered a great talent. Before his fight against Williams, he had remained undefeated in 16 professional bouts and had scored 13 wins by knockout. The Florida-born boxer had moved to Puerto Rico at the age of ten, won national titles in two weight classes as a teenager, and took gold at the 2010 Pan American Youth Championships. The World Boxing Association (WBA) honored him as “a true fighter in every sense of the word.”
