Tamara Korpatsch advanced to the second round at the WTA tournament in Cincinnati despite a rough start. The 31-year-old tennis player from Hamburg defeated world No. 75 Maya Joint (Australia) 0–6, 6–3, 6–4, marking a successful start to her warm-up for the U.S. Open.
In the round of 64, Korpatsch will face 13th-seeded Iva Jovic (USA).
At first, the Hamburg champion struggled to adapt to the fast court surface and lost the first set after 25 minutes without winning a single game.
But Korpatsch regrouped, minimized her unforced errors, and turned the open rally in her favor in the decisive third set.
On Friday night, Eva Lys will also enter the tournament; the world No. 85 will face local favorite Sofia Kenin. Tatjana Maria had already advanced to the second round on Thursday, where she will face Russia’s Diana Shnaider.
