Tamara Korpatsch scores another win and advances to the semifinals at her home tournament. She’s not done yet.
Tamara Korpatsch, who will become Germany’s new No. 1 on Monday, has advanced to the semifinals at the WTA tournament in her hometown of Hamburg.
On Friday evening, the 31-year-old pulled off a surprisingly convincing victory over second-seeded Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, winning 6-3, 1-6, 6-1.

In her first match against Kalinina, Korpatsch—just as she did in the round of 16—found the right response after losing the second set.
Awaiting her in Saturday’s semifinal is Egypt’s Mayar Sherif, who recently made a huge leap in the world rankings and is now ranked 55th.
After all, the world No. 81 from Hamburg holds a positive head-to-head record against Sherif, with two wins and one loss. As the last remaining German in the field, Korpatsch remains on track for her second WTA title.
In the other semifinal, however, last year’s finalist Anna Bondar of Hungary stands as arguably the strongest remaining opponent.
