Jamie Day makes history in the ADAC GT Masters: Aston Martin ends a 17-year pole drought at the Nürburgring
Briton Jamie Day has secured the first pole position in the ADAC GT Masters for himself and his team, Comtoyou. With a time of 1:24.834, he drove his Aston Martin Vantage GT3 to the top of the Nürburgring qualifying session. It is the first pole position for an Aston Martin in the ADAC GT Masters since 2008.
“I’m incredibly happy—not just for myself, but especially for the entire team. They work so hard, and the results haven’t reflected that until now. We’ve fought so hard to get back to the top, and the credit really goes to the guys,” says a delighted Day, who shares the Aston Martin with Baudouin Detout from France.
“There’s really no plan for the race other than to get out in front, build a lead, and hold it for the rest of the race,” he says.
With a pleasant air temperature of 20 degrees, the ADAC GT Masters field took to the track for the second qualifying session on Sunday morning. A back-and-forth battle ensued between Day and Kiano Blum from Austria, who ultimately finished second. Driving the Ford Mustang GT3 for his main team’s home race, Blum ultimately fell 0.335 seconds short of the fastest time.
Guest team SR Motorsport made a strong statement. Reigning ADAC GT4 champion Jay Mo Härtling set the third-fastest time in the Mercedes-AMG GT3, 0.443 seconds behind.
Alexander Tauscher from Mitterfels (Razoon) also made an impression in his very first ADAC GT Masters qualifying session. The rookie drove his Porsche to fourth on the grid, 0.519 seconds behind Day. Rounding out the top five was Max Reis from Ramstein in another Ford Mustang from HRT. He was 0.593 seconds behind Day.
