On the last day of the transfer window, Manchester City secured the services of Gianluigi Donnarumma. While the Italian keeper arrives from Paris St. Germain, Ederson moves to Turkey.
Manchester City had already signed James Trafford from Burnley at the end of July as their potential new number 1, which the English keeper also wears on his back. However, after the first three league games—and not entirely flawless performances by the new signing—the Citizens seized the opportunity and struck again: Gianluigi Donnarumma has signed a contract with ManCity until 2030.
“I am joining a world-class squad led by one of the greatest coaches in football history: Pep Guardiola,” enthused the Italian. “This is a club that every player in the world would love to join.” He said he had “admired Manchester City for many years,” so it was an honor and a privilege to now be able to play for the Cityzens.
It had been an open secret for weeks that the 26-year-old’s future would not lie in Paris. After all, PSG had decided a year before Donnarumma’s contract expired to make a change between the posts by signing Lucas Chevalier for €40 million. “He is undoubtedly one of the best goalkeepers around, and even better as a person, but we were looking for a different type of goalkeeper,” Paris coach Luis Enrique explained a few weeks ago.
After 161 competitive games and numerous titles with PSG—including the Champions League this summer—Italy’s national goalkeeper and captain is now setting up camp in Manchester.
Ederson: Fenerbahce instead of Galatasaray
In a direct response, long-time starting goalkeeper Ederson is leaving the Citizens. At the end of June, he had made it clear that his future lay in the sky blue part of Manchester and that all reports to the contrary were “99 percent fake news.” Around two months later, however, it is clear that the Brazilian is moving to Fenerbahce in Turkey. This was also confirmed on Tuesday morning.
A move to Istanbul city rivals Galatasaray is therefore off the table, which comes as something of a surprise given the weeks of speculation. The Brazilian has played 372 games for City since leaving Benfica in 2017, winning the Champions League (2022/23 season) and six Premier League titles, among other things.
