Achilles tendon surgery: Kovacic to miss City’s Club World Cup

Manchester City will be without Mateo Kovacic for the Club World Cup. The midfielder will be out for around three months after undergoing surgery on his Achilles tendon. This means he will miss both the tournament in the US and the Croatian national team’s matches.

Mateo Kovacic will miss the upcoming Club World Cup and World Cup qualifiers for Croatia due to Achilles tendon surgery. Manchester City confirmed this in a statement on Monday. Croatia’s national coach Zlatko Dalic had already announced on Friday that the midfielder would be out for around three months.

This means that the 31-year-old will miss the entire tournament for Pep Guardiola’s team. The Skyblues will kick off the Club World Cup with a match against Moroccan club Wydad Casablanca. They will then face Al-Ain FC from the United Arab Emirates and Italian record champions Juventus Turin in Group G.

“Mateo will spend the summer recovering from the operation,” the club said in a statement. Croatia national coach Dalic explained that the midfielder had been “suffering from the injury for some time” and had therefore missed the Citizens’ 1-0 defeat to Crystal Palace in the FA Cup final.

The 58-year-old will have to do without the 110-time international for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers in Gibraltar on Friday and against the Czech Republic next Monday.

Since his move from Chelsea to ManCity in June 2023, Kovacic has been a regular under Guardiola. The midfielder has made 31 league appearances this season, scoring six goals. He has also played six games in the Champions League, scoring one goal and providing one assist.
