253 charges and one arrest after Austria vs Fenerbahce

After the European Cup match between Vienna Austria and the Turkish runners-up Fenerbahce Istanbul, there were a total of 253 charges under the Criminal Code following fan riots on Friday night. As the Vienna police announced in a preliminary report, one person was arrested on suspicion of resisting state authority. Earlier, Fenerbahce had won the first leg of the Europa League play-off 2-0.

According to the police, at around 0:45 a.m., clashes broke out between the two groups of fans in the area of Reumannplatz in Vienna’s tenth district. According to the current state of investigation, about 30 Austria supporters attacked about 50 Fenerbahce fans with wooden and iron bars and chairs. According to the authorities, a counter-attack followed. The Vienna police ended the conflict situation with the “multiple” use of pepper spray.

According to a statement, a total of 80 fans (24 from Austria, 56 from Fenerbahce) were charged in this incident on “suspicion of attempted scuffle, attempted assault, as well as assault and attempted grievous bodily harm”. Two people were injured. “All others involved had previous injuries or also allergic reactions, according to their statements,” it added.

During the match, Fenerbahce goalkeeper Altay Bayindir was hit by a projectile thrown from the Vienna fan sector. The police will file “charges against unknown persons on suspicion of attempted bodily harm”. Austria will also face repercussions from UEFA in this case.
