1. FC Köln expands management – Wehrle does not extend

Three managing directors will soon be working at 1. FC Köln. In addition to Christian Keller, Philipp Türoff will also join the team. But how long will Alexander Wehrle stay?

The appointment of Christian Keller as managing director at 1. FC Köln on 1 April 2022 has been certain for a few weeks. Another newcomer will take up his post before him: With Philipp Türoff, FC will expand its management team as of 1 January.

The 45-year-old, who most recently worked as head of finance at “Birkenstock”, will in future be responsible for the areas of finance, sales management, human resources and IT. While Keller will be responsible for sports, Alexander Wehrle, who has served as FC managing director since 2013, will in future focus on corporate strategy, communications, marketing, internationalisation and sustainability.

The fact that Wehrle will not be extending his contract is announced by FC almost casually

But for how much longer? In recent days and weeks, Wehrle has increasingly come into focus as a possible successor to Thomas Hitzlsperger, who will retire as CEO at VfB Stuttgart in autumn 2022 at the latest. And at least it is now clear that Wehrle does not want to extend his contract at FC, which expires in the summer of 2023, despite an existing offer. The Cologne club announced this almost casually in the last sentence of their press release on Wednesday.

“With the idea of expanding the management team, I found the board of directors’ ears open,” Wehrle is otherwise only quoted as saying: “We were all in agreement from the start that, given the number of challenges that FC and our goals entail, it makes sense to spread the tasks over several shoulders. “

In the new year,

Türoff wants to “continue and help shape the path that the FC has taken with the current board and which I have perceived very positively from the outside “ He had been shown a perspective for the club “that I believe in”.
