Wolff on DRS inaccuracy in the “F1” movie: “If that’s the only flaw…”

The Hollywood blockbuster “F1” starring Brad Pitt will hit theaters in just over a month—after the drivers, the team bosses have also seen it and are giving their verdict

Just under a month to go until the eagerly awaited blockbuster “F1” hits theaters—the film is set to premiere in Germany on June 25.

While the audience still has to wait a little longer, most of the team bosses have now also gained a first impression, following the Formula 1 stars who were given the opportunity to admire the film for the first time during a joint cinema visit ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix: “I think we’ve all seen it,” confirms Mercedes boss Toto Wolff, referring to his colleagues.

The Viennese praises: “You can feel how excellently the film is made right from the first few minutes. The racing scenes are flawless – even we experts could hardly find anything to complain about,” says Wolff – before mentioning one small fly in the ointment: “One of the drivers said the only mistake was that both drivers activated DRS at the same time. But if that’s the only flaw…”

Vowles: “The film remains authentic to the sport”

The Mercedes team boss is certainly impressed by the racing action depicted: “For us Formula 1 people, the racing is great. The plot is good and seems realistic. Overall, I think it will be a great success – and I’m not just saying that because I’m a Formula 1 fan. It’s just a really great movie,“ is Wolff’s honest recommendation.

Aston Martin’s Andy Cowell can only agree with Wolff: ”It was a great experience to see it in advance. It’s a classic Hollywood film that incorporates the world of Formula 1 in a very successful way,“ says the Briton: ”The scenes on the track are impressively staged – especially how the fictional team merges with the real racing teams. There are also some great cameo appearances from the two guys standing next to me,” laughs Cowell, referring to Wolff and James Vowles, who is also present.

The Williams team boss also draws a positive conclusion about “F1”: “For me, it was exactly what I had hoped for. The film remains authentic to our sport. To be clear, it’s not a documentary, and it doesn’t want to be. It’s a Hollywood adaptation of what we are in Formula 1 – but it’s extremely well done.”

Vowles believes: “The concept behind it works on all levels: whether you’re a Formula 1 fan or coming into contact with it for the first time, you can follow the story and get drawn in deeper depending on your interest. In that respect, the film is brilliantly made,“ says the Brit, promising fans a bang right from the start: ”The opening scene is fantastic – and from that moment on, you’re hooked.”
