Liverpool FC failed to secure a victory in their third home game against a promoted team. After the 1-1 draw against Burnley, goalscorer Florian Wirtz was visibly disappointed and frustrated.
Florian Wirtz is getting better and better at Liverpool. On Saturday afternoon, the German international scored his third Premier League goal – all of them in the last five games. However, his goal against promoted side Burnley was only enough for a disappointing draw in the end.
Wirtz himself described the result as “very frustrating” in an interview on the club’s website. ” We had a lot of chances—enough chances to decide the game early on,“ lamented the driving force. But why was Liverpool unable to beat the third promoted team at home this season? ”We could have made better decisions a few times. But we were also unlucky at times,“ explained Wirtz. In general, however, the Reds need to ”improve in front of goal.” Coach Arne Slot’s team has scored more than two goals in only three Premier League games this season.
Basically, though, Liverpool “played a good game. Even when they scored the equalizer, I still think we were the better team and had the better chances. The ball just didn’t want to go in again. That’s so disappointing.”
Due to the unnecessary mistake, which Wirtz says “feels like a defeat,” LFC can feel Manchester United (2-0 against ManCity) and Chelsea (2-0 against Brentford) breathing down their necks. The tasks are not getting any easier: On Wednesday evening, they face a difficult Champions League away game at Olympique Marseille.
“I can feel it”
Wirtz was only able to enjoy his own goal to a limited extent on Saturday. In general, however, he now feels comfortable on the pitch: “The connection with my teammates is also really good now – we understand each other better on the pitch, and I can feel that. That gives me more confidence and makes playing more fun.”
Will Wirtz now make the difference in the Champions League for the first time? So far, he has “only” managed three assists in a Liverpool shirt, and the former Leverkusen player is still waiting for his first goal in the Champions League.
