A Vettel dominating every race in India, or a Schumacher becoming world champion on a forgotten track: there has only been one winner on these circuits
In the long history of Formula 1, there have always been tracks that stood out from the crowd – whether because of their layout, their location or because they were only part of the racing calendar for a short time. Some of them share a very special detail: they have only seen one winner in their entire Formula 1 history.
Some of these tracks only appeared on the calendar once, while others were featured for several years. But regardless of whether they were one-offs or repeat appearances, only one driver ever topped the results list. It’s a special feature that is often overlooked, but tells some exciting stories.
One example is India. The Buddh International Circuit hosted a Grand Prix for three years, from 2011 to 2013. Sebastian Vettel won all three races. The Red Bull driver dominated there at will and even secured his fourth world championship title ahead of schedule on this track in 2013. After that, Formula 1 disappeared from the subcontinent – and Vettel remained undefeated.
Alongside Vettel, Michael Schumacher also belongs to the exclusive circle of solo winners on a single track – and like his compatriot, he also celebrated a world championship title there – but the track is no longer known for much else in Formula 1 circles.
There are 15 such tracks in total, all of which have one thing in common: an exclusive field of winners. Sometimes it’s the dominant phase of a top driver, sometimes it’s lucky circumstances – and sometimes it’s both. And it always tells you something about the era in question.
Which race tracks are included, which drivers have won there and why exactly no one else has been successful on these circuits… Included: plenty of motorsport nostalgia, forgotten venues, and a few eye-opening moments – even for long-time fans.
