Tennis pro Sinner achieves “sunshine double”

The weather doesn’t really cooperate at the end of the tournament in Miami. The favorite is undeterred in the final and extends his winning streak.

Jannik Sinner has crowned a perfect month of tennis in the USA and also won the Masters tournament in Miami. After beating Alexander Zverev in the semi-finals, the world number two from Italy won 6:4, 6:4 against the Czech Jiri Lehecka in the final.

Sinner had already won the title at the Masters in Indian Wells, California. The 24-year-old thus became the eighth player in total to achieve the so-called “Sunshine Double” – and the first since Roger Federer in 2017. Sinner is the first to achieve this feat without losing a set. At the same time, the South Tyrolean extended his record record at Masters tournaments and has now won 34 sets in a row.

“This is a very special moment,” said Sinner after his success in Miami, “I never thought I would win the Sunshine Double because it is so difficult to achieve.”.

Sinner’s second title in Miami

The final in Florida started more than an hour late due to rain. After Sinner had secured the first round thanks to an early break, the match had to be interrupted for more than an hour at the start of the second set due to more rain.

In the second, evenly poised set, Sinner got the decisive break to make it 5:4 and then safely took the service. After 1:33 hours of pure playing time, Sinner completed his second success at the event after 2024. Last year, he was unable to defend his title due to a doping ban.

Lehecka, who is also 24 years old, reached his first Masters Series final and will reach his highest ever position of 15th in the world rankings. Before his success over the Czech, Sinner had recorded his seventh success in a row against the best German tennis pro with a 6:3, 7:6 (7:4) win over Zverev. This was the fourth time in five appearances that he had reached the final of the hard-court tournament, which is endowed with 9.4 million US dollars (8.16 million euros).
