The Leagues Cup final between Inter Miami and the Seattle Sounders ended with a brawl and an unsightly scene involving Luis Suarez: the Uruguayan spat in the face of a member of the opposing team’s coaching staff. Now he has issued an apology.
“It was a moment of tension and frustration, and immediately after the game, things happened that shouldn’t have happened, but that doesn’t justify my reaction. I made a mistake and I sincerely regret it,” Luis Suarez wrote on Instagram.
Suarez took the opportunity to congratulate the Sounders on social media for their 3-0 victory in the Leagues Cup (a club competition involving teams from the American MLS and the Mexican Liga MX) and added: “Above all, I would like to apologize for my behavior after the game.”
The scuffle was also triggered by Suarez
The striker initially triggered a scuffle and then spat in the face of a Seattle Sounders coach. His unsportsmanlike behavior is not the image he wants to convey to his family, who suffer from his mistakes. And his club, Inter Miami, did not deserve to be affected by something like this either.
“I feel bad about what happened, and I didn’t want to let the opportunity pass to acknowledge this and apologize to everyone who felt hurt by my behavior. We know we have a long way to go, and we will work together to achieve the success that this club and all its fans deserve.”
MLS launches investigation
This kind of apology is nothing new for Suarez, as the former world star has repeatedly attracted attention in the past for unsportsmanlike behavior. Perhaps most famous is his biting attack on Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini at the 2014 World Cup. He has also caused controversy with racist insults.
The 38-year-old, who has clearly not learned from his mistakes even at an advanced age for a soccer player, has been punished several times for such behavior. It remains to be seen what punishment awaits the hothead this time. The MLS has now launched an investigation.
