Strong Swiatek reaches quarterfinals in New York

The Polish world number two had little trouble in the round of 16 against Ekaterina Alexandrova.

Iga Swiatek reached the quarterfinals of the US Open in quick fashion. The Wimbledon champion from Poland defeated Laura Siegemund’s conqueror Ekaterina Alexandrova 6-3, 6-1 in just 64 minutes in the round of 16, putting in a strong performance.

The quarterfinals will now see a rematch of the Wimbledon final against Amanda Anisimova. In London, Swiatek defeated the American 6-0, 6-0 in a historic victory that took just 58 minutes.

The world number two, who won the WTA tournament in Cincinnati ahead of the last Grand Slam event of the year, is chasing her second title in New York after 2022.

Swiatek is once again among the favorites this year, as she impressively demonstrated in her match against Alexandrov. She only faltered briefly on her own serve at the start of the match, but then quickly found her rhythm. With hard and precise shots, she repeatedly pushed Alexandrov back, and in the second set she managed two breaks. She then took advantage of her first match point.
