Record transfer for Glasner: Palace snags Johnson

The transfer window has just opened—and already there is a record to report: Crystal Palace has signed Brennan Johnson from Tottenham Hotspur, setting a new club record. It is also the most expensive transfer of the winter so far.

It had already been on the cards, and on Friday the transfer was finally made official: Crystal Palace secured the services of Brennan Johnson, paying €40 million – more than the Eagles have ever paid for a single player before.

“We believe we are the perfect place for Brennan to continue his already impressive career,” said club boss Steve Parish, emphasizing that Johnson “strengthens our attacking options in what is arguably our busiest season to date.” In addition to the Premier League, the Eagles are also still in the Conference League.

The Welsh international (42 caps, 7 goals) replaces Belgian striker Christian Benteke (35), who was signed from Liverpool in 2016 for €31 million and is now under contract with Al Wahda in the United Arab Emirates.

Glasner’s double delight

Palace coach Oliver Glasner is delighted that the player has joined his club, but also that the transfer was completed so early in the transfer window. “The club deserves respect for making this happen so quickly,” said the Austrian, before revealing what he expects from his new signing: “Brennan’s speed and goalscoring abilities will give us more options in attack and he will be a valuable addition to the team ahead of the upcoming games.”

Johnson, who scored the winning goal in Spurs’ 1-0 victory over Manchester United in the 2025 Europa League final, said, “It’s a great time for me to be here and join the journey this club is on—I’m really excited. Crystal Palace is a great club that I’ve always admired.”

At Spurs, Johnson, who Tottenham signed from Nottingham Forest for €55 million in the summer of 2023, had recently been sidelined after Mohammed Kudus (24) – signed from West Ham United for €64 million in the summer – had stolen his thunder. After 107 games and 27 goals, he is now leaving northeast London and moving to the south of the British capital.
