The Czech top talent travels to Melbourne on a high after his success.
Czech tennis pro Jakub Mensik has won the ATP tournament in Auckland, sending a strong signal ahead of the upcoming Australian Open. The 20-year-old defeated Argentina’s Sebastian Báez 6-3, 7-6 (9-7) in Saturday’s final to celebrate his second title on the tour after his triumph in Miami last year.
Mensik was particularly impressive with his serve: the world number 18 hit a total of 18 aces and kept his nerve at the decisive moments. “I’m super happy that I performed so well,” he said in the winner’s interview. Mensik, who is the youngest player in the top 25 of the world rankings, has had a complicated tournament. Due to rain interruptions, he had to play both his quarterfinal and semifinal on Friday.
