“Not the right time”: Kahn pulls out of bidding for Girondins Bordeaux

Oliver Kahn’s entry as an investor in Girondins de Bordeaux will not happen. The 55-year-old confirmed this on Monday evening.

“After intensive discussions and consideration, we have decided against investing in FC Girondins de Bordeaux,” Kahn wrote on Instagram, before explaining his decision to Bordeaux fans.

“With this letter, I am addressing the fans of FCGB, who have shown me so much support over the past few months,” Kahn wrote, first reminiscing about personal memories as he looked back on the second leg of the 1995/96 UEFA Cup final.

“I remember it as if it were yesterday. The atmosphere at Parc Lescure was every bit as good as that of 65,000 fans at Munich’s Olympic Stadium. Under the leadership of Franz Beckenbauer and alongside legends such as Matthäus, Klinsmann, Kostadinov, and Ziege, we had the privilege of playing against icons such as Zinedine Zidane, Bixente Lizarazu, and Christophe Dugarry. That moment is forever etched in my memory.”

But then Kahn addressed the now-defunct investment. “Last winter, we decided to explore the possibility of becoming the new owner of FC Girondins de Bordeaux. In January 2025, we submitted a formal offer to the current owner, including proof of financing, and later also to the insolvency administrator.”

Review of the figures

At the end of last week, a better understanding of the club’s financial figures was finally gained – and this now seems to have led to a change of heart. “After reviewing the financial, operational, and legal information presented to us at the end of last week, we have decided not to provide the approximately €50 million that was earmarked in our plan to return FCGB to Ligue 1.”

Kahn told Bild that it was currently “not the right time for an investment of this magnitude” as it would be “too uncertain.”
