The three-way battle for victory at the Lausitzring on Sunday has all the makings of an absolute DTM classic: a video now shows the final two laps from an unusual angle
It was one of the most exciting DTM races in recent years – with an absolute heart-stopping finale in the final laps and a photo finish! Fans can now watch what Schubert BMW driver Rene Rast, Emil Frey Ferrari man Jack Aitken, and Winward Mercedes rookie Jules Gounon delivered at the Lausitzring last Sunday from a completely new perspective.
The DTM has released a spectacular drone video showing the last two laps of the thriller in full, which you can enjoy below: featuring Aitken’s great overtaking maneuver against Rene Rast, which secured him the victory, and Gounon’s wheel-to-wheel duel with the BMW works driver right up to the finish line.
“Of course, it’s most fun when you win in the end, but it was really cool that our three cars came together like that at the end,” enthused Aitken, who celebrated his fifth victory in the DTM. “And this is a track that allows for good racing and overtaking maneuvers.”
The second mandatory pit stop introduced this year on Sunday also played a significant role in the excitement in the final stages. Aitken and Rast ended up with the worst tires available, which had already been used in qualifying and in the first stint the day before.
Gounon, on the other hand, started from 13th on the grid with the worst tires, made up a lot of ground in the middle stint with the qualifying tires, and also had better tires than his rivals at the end with the tires used in the second stint of the race the day before.
Rast’s tires completely wore out, which explains his difficulties, while Aitken managed not to push the tires too hard. We have summarized how the three drivers experienced the race and, above all, the final stages in a separate article.
