Marc Marquez wins the sprint and the Grand Prix in Hungary and is in a class of his own – Pedro Acosta (KTM) and Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) on the podium
Marc Marquez continued his winning streak on the MotoGP’s return to Hungary at the new Balaton Park Circuit. After winning the sprint, the Ducati factory rider also won the Grand Prix. It was his seventh double victory in a row and his tenth Grand Prix victory of the season.
Pedro Acosta (KTM) and Marco Bezzecchi (Aprilia) took second and third place (results). Alex Marquez (Gresini-Ducati) crashed in the early stages and finished 14th. This gives Marc Marquez a 175-point lead in the World Championship (World Championship standings).
Even before the 26-lap race started, there was drama at VR46. At the end of the warm-up lap, Fabio Di Giannantonio returned to the pits due to a technical problem and switched to the second Ducati. Instead of starting from the front row, he had to start from the pit lane.

Unlike the sprint, the start and the first corner were not quite as turbulent, but in turn 2 there was contact between Bezzecchi and Marc Marquez. This allowed Bezzecchi to take the lead ahead of Franco Morbidelli (VR46-Ducati) and Marc Marquez.
During the first lap, Enea Bastianini crashed in the third sector at the entrance to a chicane. He and his KTM slid across the chicane back onto the middle of the track, but all the riders behind him were able to avoid him.
At the end of the first lap, Bezzecchi led ahead of Morbidelli, Marc Marquez, Acosta, and Fermin Aldeguer (Gresini-Ducati). At the start of the second lap, Alex Marquez crashed in turn 1, but was able to continue the race.

The next crash occurred in lap 3 in the second sector. Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse-Aprilia) and Joan Mir (Honda) crashed simultaneously, independently of each other. Both rode back to the pits. Mir gave up, Fernandez went out again but then also retired.
After the turbulent early stages, the race settled down. Marc Marquez overtook Morbidelli and snatched second place. After five laps, Bezzecchi led by around a second ahead of the red Ducati with the number 93.
Marc Marquez closed in on the Aprilia in leaps and bounds. At the same time, Acosta was also getting faster and faster. The KTM front runners easily passed Morbidelli and took up pursuit of the leading duo.

At the front, Marc Marquez initially attacked Bezzecchi in turn 1 on lap 7, but the Italian countered. The next attack came in turn 5, but Bezzecchi again held the lead. Bezzecchi was riding on soft rear tires, Marquez on harder mediums.
At the start of lap 11, Marc Marquez tried again in turn 1 and this time his maneuver worked. The serial winner was now ahead of Bezzecchi in the lead. Acosta was third, just under a second behind.
That was already the decision for the victory, because Marc Marquez pulled away at the front and rode unchallenged to his seventh double victory in a row. He built up a lead of over three seconds and controlled the cushion until the finish.

After 15 laps, Acosta had caught up with Bezzecchi and was looking for a way past the Aprilia. On lap 16, Acosta attacked in turn 1 and took second place. Bezzecchi was unable to counter. That sealed the podium places.
Starting from 16th on the grid, Jorge Martin (Aprilia) had a strong race. The world champion stayed out of trouble and steadily made up positions. With five laps to go, he caught up with Morbidelli and easily snatched fourth place.
In the final stages, Morbidelli had to defend himself against Marini. When Marini attacked his VR46 teammate, Morbidelli cut a chicane. This gave him a slight lead. The race director instructed him to give up one position.

At the end of the penultimate lap, Morbidelli let Marini pass. The order remained unchanged. Marini crossed the finish line just ahead of Morbidelli in fifth place. The KTM duo Brad Binder and Pol Espargaro followed in seventh and eighth place.
Francesco Bagnaia (Ducati) had to serve a long-lap penalty for cutting corner 16. He ultimately held off Fabio Quartararo (Yamaha) in the closing stages to finish ninth.
Ai Ogura (Trackhouse-Aprilia), Miguel Oliveira (Pramac-Yamaha), Alex Rins (Yamaha), Alex Marquez, Di Giannantonio and Aldeguer finished outside the top 10. Like his teammate, the Gresini rookie crashed in turn 1.
Jack Miller (Pramac-Yamaha) crashed twice during the race. After the second crash in turn 11, the race was over for him. At the start of the final third of the race, Johann Zarco (LCR-Honda) flew off at one of the fastest points on the track.
The next Grand Prix will take place in Spain in two weeks’ time. The Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya will be the venue from September 5 to 7.
