Marc Marquez is delighted with Alex’s victory: But his ambition prevails

Marc Marquez is delighted with his brother’s successes in MotoGP—but the Spaniard wants to be the best himself, so he can’t enjoy it fully

Alex Marquez celebrated his first MotoGP victory in front of his home crowd in Jerez. He also benefited from the crash of his older brother Alex Marquez, who has won three races so far in the 2025 season. Alex Marquez leads the overall standings by one point ahead of Marc, who is happy for his brother but also very ambitious.

“What annoyed me most was that I didn’t know why I crashed,” said Marc Marquez after the race in Spain. ”I analyzed it afterwards. On Sunday, you talk to the media 30 minutes after the mistake – I wanted to focus on Alex’s victory and deliberately blocked out my crash.”

“But after analyzing the telemetry, it’s clear: I was too fast,” admits the older of the two brothers. ”I relied on my instincts, on the confidence that last year gave me. It was my first crash in a left-hand corner this year. After the race, Marquez needed some time to collect himself.

“I rode my bike for two hours to get rid of my frustration,” said Marc Marquez. ”But I wasn’t angry – disappointed, maybe. In my current state, second place in the world championship just doesn’t feel like enough. I’m only one point behind Alex, but I made two big mistakes. If I want to fight for the title, that can’t happen. The pace is there – but now it’s all about management.”

“I’ve analyzed the cause of the crash, noted it down, and will avoid it in the future,” said Marquez combatively. ‘Today is a new day, and we were fast again in testing, both in the morning and in the afternoon.’ No new parts were used in testing, but Marc Marquez was able to try out new settings and ideas on his Ducati together with his engineers.

Marc Marquez can look forward to upgrades at Ducati, but his brother Alex will have to make do without anything at Gresini for now. “That’s not my decision and I’m not going to get involved,” said the Spaniard. “I work with my team and he works with his. But Alex is riding very strongly with what he has. And at the moment, we’re riding almost identical bikes. Alex is very fast, I’m proud of him.”

On Sunday, Marc did not celebrate with his brother in the Gresini pit. ”He didn’t celebrate either, the team did. I wasn’t there, but I stopped by later, congratulated the team, and had a little cake. I know a lot of people there from last year—it’s my brother’s team,” says Marc Marquez about the separation between him and his brother in the MotoGP paddock.
