Cameroon is the fourth quarterfinalist in the Africa Cup of Nations. Christian Kofane of Leverkusen scored again in a somewhat flattering victory over South Africa.
At the last moment, Ivory Coast snatched first place in the group from Cameroon, meaning that the “Indomitable Lions” faced South Africa in the round of 16 – not an easy draw. The traditionally well-coordinated team led by Belgian coach Hugo Broos showed why this was the case right from the start. South Africa started the game much stronger and had two early chances through Foster (3′) and Mokofeng (8′), but Bafana Bafana failed to convert either of them. This was a theme that would continue throughout the game.
Especially in the first half hour of the game, South Africa was virtually the only team playing, but they were unable to finish their attacks successfully. And when Foster finally beat Cameroon’s keeper Epassy, the flag went up (14th minute). This made it all the more bitter for the South Africans because Cameroon took advantage of their first chance in the middle of the first half: after a corner was cleared, a long-range shot from Baleba was deflected twice and ended up at the feet of Tchamadeu. The Stoke City full-back was completely unmarked and had no trouble slotting home to give his side a flattering lead (34′).
Kofane strikes again: Cameroon ruthlessly efficient
The goal gave Cameroon a noticeable boost, which continued into the second half. Less than two minutes into the second half, Leverkusen striker Kofane headed a measured cross from Nagida into the far corner to score his second goal of the tournament (47th minute) – Cameroon gave their opponents a lesson in efficiency.
South Africa continued to play well going forward, but simply couldn’t find the back of the net. This was also due to Cameroon goalkeeper Epassy, who made excellent saves against both Kabini (63′) and a Mokoena free kick (69′). However, Nagida (70′) and Kofane (80′) failed to seal the deal, keeping South Africa in the game and allowing them to pull one back late on through substitute Makgopa, who pushed a Modiba cross over the line (88′). The substitute even had a chance to equalize in stoppage time, but his header over the onrushing Epassy rolled just wide of the empty goal (90+1).
In the end, it was a rather flattering victory for Cameroon, who will now face hosts Morocco in the quarterfinals. The Moroccans had laboriously beaten Tanzania 1-0 earlier in the evening.
