Manchester United is apparently stepping up its pursuit of Benjamin Sesko—which could also have consequences for Rasmus Höjlund. His initial reaction was impressive.
Rasmus Höjlund immediately raised his left arm in celebration, but it wasn’t enough: He may have deflected Amad’s shot decisively, but when the goal scorer was finally announced at Soldier Field, Höjlund’s name was not mentioned. Nevertheless, the Dane could feel like the big winner on Thursday night (CEST) after Manchester United’s 4-1 friendly win over AFC Bournemouth.
Because it had been leaked via The Athletic a few hours earlier that the Red Devils were stepping up their efforts to sign Benjamin Sesko, Höjlund had been under particular scrutiny – and he reacted quickly: he scored the opening goal with a header in the eighth minute and remained a constant presence until he was substituted in the 70th minute, even though he was denied a second goal.
Højlund joined Atalanta Bergamo in 2023 for around €75 million, but has only occasionally lived up to expectations as a goalscorer. After scoring 14 goals in 62 Premier League games, transfer rumors are now rife – especially because of Sesko. ManUnited has reportedly already held informal talks with RB Leipzig and registered its interest in the Slovenian, who, like Höjlund, was born in 2003. According to the BBC, Sesko is ManUnited’s dream player. At RB, which has already invested over €90 million in new players but has only generated €6 million in revenue and is therefore still dependent on income, he is considered a candidate for sale.
Amorim wants another center forward – but praises Höjlund extensively
After the rainy test in Chicago, Amorim praised his goalscorer extensively, not only for his goals, but also for how he held up the ball, tied up defenders, and combined with his teammates. “We play better because he plays better. I’m really happy with Rasmus.”
However, even the Portuguese coach could not guarantee that Höjlund will play for United in the new season. “I don’t know what will happen before the transfer window closes. The most important thing is that the strikers we have work hard and improve. And for Rasmus, the most important thing is to score goals.” He has already scored one or two against Bournemouth.
