Hefty transfer fee one year before contract expiry: Frankfurt sells Tuta

Eintracht Frankfurt has generated another impressive transfer fee this summer: Qatari club Al-Duhail is paying a remarkable €15 million for Tuta (26).

The topic gained momentum on Wednesday evening when Eintracht Frankfurt officially announced that Tuta had been released for talks with another club. Now, the three parties involved have announced that the deal has been completed: the defender is moving to the desert with immediate effect, with Qatari club Al-Duhail winning the bid. The transfer fee is a remarkable €15 million – one year before the Brazilian’s contract expires.

“Tuta has been an important part of our team in recent years and has played a major role in Eintracht’s development and success during this time,” praised Frankfurt’s sporting director Markus Krösche: “By winning the Europa League, he will forever be part of the club’s history. It was therefore only natural for us to grant his wish to leave. We wish him all the best for the future.”

Frankfurt also took advantage of the last real opportunity to cash in on Tuta. In January 2019, Eintracht signed the then 19-year-old from FC Sao Paulo for just €1.8 million. The SGE acquired 70 percent of the transfer rights. Six years later, the transfer fee has increased almost tenfold.

The departure comes as no surprise

The Brazilian’s departure comes as no surprise, as he had to decide whether to extend his contract or leave when it expired. Frankfurt was keen to avoid a transfer without a fee.

Tuta, who spent the 2019/20 season on loan at KV Kotrijk, has made a total of 136 Bundesliga appearances (nine goals) and a further 13 appearances in the DFB Cup. Internationally, the long-serving player made seven Champions League and 22 Europa League appearances for Frankfurt. He was in Frankfurt’s starting line-up for their Europa League triumph in May 2022 (5-4 on penalties against Glasgow Rangers).
