Furious French Open debut

Joao Fonseca caused a sensation on his French Open debut. The 18-year-old easily defeated Hubert Hurkacz.

Brazil’s exceptional tennis talent Joao Fonseca caused a sensation on his French Open debut. The 18-year-old defeated 30th-seeded Hubert Hurkacz of Poland in Paris with an impressive 6-2, 6-4, 6-2 victory and will now face France’s Pierre-Hugues Herbert in the second round.

Hurkacz, a former Wimbledon semi-finalist, lost the final in Geneva on Saturday in three sets to Novak Djokovic. Fonseca, already ranked 65th in the world, gave the tall Pole no chance on Court 7. After less than two hours of play, the Brazilian took his fourth match point to win.

Fonseca has already won an ATP title

Fonseca won his first ATP title in Buenos Aires in February. Only six players in the history of the tour were younger than him when they won their first tournament.

In his Grand Slam debut in Melbourne in January, he knocked out ninth-seeded Russian Andrey Rublev in the first round before being eliminated in the second round.
