After a dry spell of 80 races, Sebastien Buemi triumphs again in Formula E: Oliver Rowland extends his championship lead with second place
Sebastien Buemi celebrated his first Formula E victory in Monaco in almost six years. The Envision driver benefited from changeable conditions on an increasingly dry track and a strong strategy from his team to win the E-Prix after an eventful race.
After his success in Saturday’s first race, championship leader Oliver Rowland (Nissan) started the second race from pole position after beating Nyck de Vries (Mahindra) in qualifying. However, rain began to fall shortly before the start, forcing the field to start the race on wet track with Hankook all-weather tires.
Rowland initially retained the lead but soon had to relinquish it to Jean-Eric Vergne (DS-Penske), who activated attack mode early on. The race was interrupted shortly afterwards by a full-course yellow phase, triggered by a slip by Lucas di Grassi (Abt-Lola). A safety car phase followed shortly afterwards after an accident involving Nico Müller (Andretti).
At the restart, the Envision team demonstrated perfect timing: Buemi seized the opportunity and took the lead. From then on, the Swiss driver did not relinquish the lead and crossed the finish line with a lead of more than four seconds – his first victory since the 2019 New York E-Prix, when he was still driving for the Nissan e.dams team.
Rowland, who had to let Vergne back past him after an illegal overtaking maneuver at the harbor chicane, fought his way back to second place. This further extended his lead in the drivers’ standings. Nick Cassidy (Jaguar) completed the podium.

The two Germans Pascal Wehrlein (Porsche) and Maximilian Günther (DS-Penske) finished seventh and eighth respectively. David Beckmann (Krio) once again missed out on the points in 19th place.
In the World Championship standings, Rowland now has 115 points after seven of 16 races, giving him a 48-point lead over Antonio Felix da Costa (67, Porsche). Wehrlein is currently third in the World Championship with 66 points.
Formula E continues on May 17 and 18 with the next double-header in the Japanese capital Tokyo.
