CD Cruz Azul has secured the CONCACAF Champions Cup title for the seventh time, earning a spot in the 2029 Club World Cup.
CD Cruz Azul dominated the Vancouver Whitecaps in the final as Paris Saint-Germain did against Inter Milan in Saturday’s Champions League final. While the French side were “only” 2-0 up at half-time in Munich, the Mexican first division side had already sealed the deal in the first half with four goals at their home stadium.
Striker Angel Sepulveda (37th, 50th) was the man of the match with two goals. In the end, the team from Mexico City won the final against the Whitecaps convincingly – and like PSG, they lifted the trophy – with a score of 5-0. Former Union player Damir Kreilach (36) was only on the bench for Vancouver.
The title in the North American equivalent of the European Champions League thus went to a team from Mexico for the third time in a row and for the 18th time in the past 19 years. Cruz Azul won the Champions Cup for the seventh time, equaling the record set by rivals Club America.
Amidst all the celebrations, it’s also worth noting that by winning the title, Cruz Azul has qualified for the 2029 Club World Cup and will be able to showcase itself on the big stage in four years’ time.
The Whitecaps, who had defeated Inter Miami in the semifinals and ended Lionel Messi’s title dream, missed out on becoming the first Canadian team to win the continent’s most important tournament.
