ManCity reports decline in revenue and loss

Manchester City’s poor preseason has also had a financial impact. However, the club boss is cleverly reinterpreting it.

Although it “only” won the championship, FC Bayern reported another record revenue of €978.3 million and a profit at the beginning of November. Manchester City, on the other hand, is another top European club that has had to cope with an unusual decline in revenue in the past financial year. On Tuesday, coach Pep Guardiola’s employer announced that it had generated revenue of €791.6 million in 2024/25. Although this is still the third-highest in the club’s history after the record years of 2022/23 (€812.2 million) and 2023/24 (€815.4 million), it is below the £700 million mark for the first time since 2021/22.

The fact that ManCity had a weak season by its own standards is also reflected financially in the fact that, for the first time since 2019/20, it is back in the red – with a loss of €11.3 million. The Citizens ended the 2022/23 treble season with a surplus of €91.7 million and the 2023/24 season with €84.2 million.

“A crucial year for further strengthening the club”

After four consecutive league titles, ManCity finished third in the previous season and was eliminated in the knockout rounds of the “new” Champions League before the round of 16. “There is no doubt that last season’s football results fell short of our expectations,” Khaldoon Al Mubarak said on Tuesday. “There are clear and understandable reasons for this, including an unfortunate series of serious injuries, but such seasons are an inevitable part of the game.”

However, ManCity’s club boss does not view 2024/25 entirely negatively. “I believe we can look back on this year as a pivotal one for the further and long-term strengthening of the club. Our focus on continuous improvement has not wavered in any way.” These twelve months “will only make us stronger as a club.”

No tears this time: Dembelé now also FIFA World Footballer of the Year

Ousmane Dembelé had already won the Ballon d’Or at the end of September. Now the PSG striker has also been named FIFA World Footballer of the Year 2025.

Once again, the winner is Ousmane Dembelé. The 28-year-old was also named FIFA’s best player of 2025. At a gala dinner in the Qatari capital of Doha on Tuesday evening, FIFA President Gianni Infantino presented the trophy to the Paris Saint-Germain forward. Unlike at the more prestigious Ballon d’Or, Dembelé did not shed tears of joy this time. He gave a short speech with words of thanks at a FIFA event that, compared to the World Cup draw two weeks ago, was rushed through.

Lamine Yamal and Mbappé beaten again

As with the Ballon d’Or, Dembelé beat his main rival, Lamine Yamal of FC Barcelona, who had also been considered a strong contender. Kylian Mbappé also made it onto the podium. Harry Kane of FC Bayern Munich was also nominated, but had no real chance of winning. Last year, Real Madrid striker Vinicius Junior won the trophy, but this time he did not even make the 11-man shortlist.

With his club Paris Saint-Germain, Dembelé won pretty much everything last season, with the French club also winning the Champions League for the first time. The top scorer in Ligue 1 last season played a decisive role in this, also impressing in the Champions League with eight goals and six assists.

Only in the Club World Cup did PSG and Dembelé have to settle for second place, with Chelsea FC coming out on top in the final. The next title is already beckoning this Wednesday: in Al-Rayyan, Qatar, they will face Flamengo from Brazil for the Intercontinental Cup, the successor to the “old” Club World Cup.

“I hope I can come back next year”

Fans, the current captains and coaches of the men’s and women’s national teams, and selected media representatives took part in the vote. Georg Holzner voted for Dembelé, Vitinha, and Nuno Mendes.

The world governing body has been honoring the FIFA World Player of the Year since 1991. Between 2010 and 2015, FIFA and the newspaper France Football, which launched the Ballon d’Or in 1956, cooperated and awarded only one prize together as the FIFA Ballon d’Or.

In any case, Dembelé has got a taste for it. “I hope I can come back next year,” he said on Tuesday in Doha.

After three Ballon d’Or awards: Aitana completes her FIFA hat trick

0

The string of personal trophies for Aitana Bonmati continues unabated. The Spanish player, who is currently injured, has now been named FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year for the third time.

Where other professionals have a trophy cabinet, Aitana now needs a room of her own. The 27-year-old from FC Barcelona won the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year award for the third time on Tuesday evening in Doha. She had already been named the winner in 2023 and 2024. This completes Aitana’s next personal hat trick: she also won the Ballon d’Or every year from 2023 to 2025. For the fifth time in a row, both awards go to the same person. In 2021 and 2022, Alexia Putellas, Aitana’s club and national team colleague, won both awards.

Five-month break due to a broken fibula

There were no German players or Bundesliga professionals among the 17 nominees, but there were five Spanish players and five FC Barcelona professionals. Aitana celebrated the national treble with the Catalans in the 2024/25 season, only losing to Arsenal in the Champions League final.

Spain also finished second at the European Championship, losing to England on penalties in the final. Aitana missed her attempt there. Both at the European Championship and in the Champions League, UEFA named the central midfielder the most valuable player of the competition.

So the next personal trophy in Doha came as no surprise to anyone, but it could offer some consolation to the title holder. Due to a broken fibula, she is currently sidelined for five months and therefore missed the second leg of the Nations League final, which her teammates won 3-0 against Germany.

Regensburg team doctor receives FIFA Fair Play Award 2025

A great honor for Andreas Harlass-Neuking. The team doctor of third division club SSV Jahn Regensburg has been awarded the FIFA Fair Play Award 2025.

Jahn Regensburg has been relegated from the 2nd Bundesliga and is now fighting to stay in the 3rd league. However, a game in April from their second division days has now resulted in an honor. Even before the Upper Palatinate team’s match on the 30th match day at 1. FC Magdeburg (0:3), Andreas Harlass-Neuking had to intervene. The SSV team doctor resuscitated a fan in the home block. The specialist, who has been working for Regensburg since 1995, then “ensured that the Magdeburg fan was stable enough to be taken to a nearby hospital,” according to the FIFA statement.

The world governing body issued the statement because Harlass-Neuking was awarded the 2025 Fair Play Award by FIFA for his actions in Magdeburg.

Congratulations from Infantino

“Congratulations to Dr. Andreas Harlass-Neuking on winning the FIFA Fair Play Award 2025 for your quick thinking and swift action in saving the life of a 1. FC Magdeburg fan during a 2nd Bundesliga match,” wrote FIFA President Gianni Infantino on Instagram: “Your sportsmanship, selflessness, and compassion reflect the best aspects of our beautiful sport.”

Wemby out: Knicks celebrate first title in 52 years

0

The New York Knicks have won the NBA Cup. The team from the Big Apple prevailed 124-113 against the San Antonio Spurs in the final.

After more than 52 years, the Knicks have won another title. It may only be the NBA Cup, but it was still cause for celebration in Las Vegas. The Knicks’ top scorers were O.G. Anunoby (28 points) and Jalen Brunson (25), but in the end it was role players such as Mitchell Robinson (9 points, 15 rebounds), Jordan Clarkson (15) and Tyler Kolek (14) who made important plays for the Knicks. Nevertheless, Brunson was named MVP.

German center Ariel Hukporti, on the other hand, only played for 112 seconds, but the Stralsund native still benefits from the title and, like the entire team, pockets a decent victory bonus.

San Antonio led by double digits in the second half, but didn’t accomplish much in the fourth quarter. That was also true for Victor Wembanyama, who came off the bench again. With 18 points (7/17 FG, 6 rebounds), he was the second-highest scorer after rookie Dylan Harper (21), with a total of seven Texan players scoring in double digits. At first, everything was fairly even. The Knicks converted their three-pointers, but the Spurs got into the zone at will thanks to De’Aaron Fox and distributed the ball well there. For New York, it was mainly Brunson and Anunoby who provided the offense, while the Spurs were a little more balanced. And so the Texans led 61-59 at the break, even though Wembanyama had only been a factor defensively up to that point.

Robinson turns the game around for the Knicks

But that changed after the break. When Wemby came off the bench again, his presence was much more noticeable. The Frenchman made two three-pointers, was served two lobs and also scored from mid-range for twelve points in the quarter. San Antonio suddenly led by double digits and Karl-Anthony Towns had to sit on the bench in great pain.

But Robinson played more and the center caused the Spurs massive problems under the boards. The big man grabbed one offensive rebound after another and gave the Knicks important second chances. Jordan Clarkson benefited twice at the start of the fourth quarter, putting the Knicks back in the lead (97-94) with back-to-back three-pointers. And that lead remained because San Antonio didn’t score much more and Robinson continued to wreak havoc. Backup guard Kolek also played well and took some of the pressure off Brunson. Stephon Castle (15 points, 12 assists) cut the Spurs’ deficit to 105-108 with 5:23 left in the game, but San Antonio only managed two field goals after that and the Knicks cruised to victory.

“Not so nice”: How Schumacher responds to Marko’s criticism of Red Bull

0

Helmut Marko has once again criticized Christian Horner – Why Ralf Schumacher can understand the accusations, but finds them “a bit of a shame.”

Following his surprising departure from Red Bull, Helmut Marko launched another broadside against former team boss Christian Horner a few days ago. Among other things, the 82-year-old Austrian accuses the Briton of having “played dirty games” in the past.

These are strong words, but they come as no surprise to Formula 1 expert Ralf Schumacher. “No, not at all,” said the 50-year-old in an interview with Sky, emphasizing that he had already “mentioned often enough” the internal power struggles this year. “And it was also clear that there were two camps.”

Although the German believes that Red Bull is “not entirely happy” with Marko’s current statements, “you have to agree with Helmut Marko,” says Schumacher, who himself is once again clear: “The team was a disaster. It fell apart.”

Horner’s behavior “cost good people”

“It lost an incredible number of personnel and an incredible number of employees,” recalls the Sky expert. “Just because of Christian Horner, because he behaved in a way that, according to internal sources, meant that he was the only one who achieved anything here. He didn’t need anyone else.”

“That cost us good people,” Schumacher knows. “And above all, the big problem was that no one wanted to come anymore.” After that, it took a long time for Red Bull to part ways with its long-time team boss “in agreement with the Thai side.”

Although Marko is absolutely right in his latest statements, “I personally would have preferred him to have done it at the time when he was still there, in office and in a position of authority,” says the 50-year-old. The kick against Red Bull is “a bit of a shame” and “actually not very nice.”

And that’s not the only point Schumacher criticizes: “As much as I like Helmut, I have to remind him that he had the chance to fire Horner while Dietrich Mateschitz was still alive.” At that time, however, the two were still very close and had “joined forces for a certain cause.”

Christian Horner has “very few friends”

“They actually had plans to do a big business deal together,” reveals the former Formula 1 driver with a smile: “I don’t want to say what it was, that wouldn’t be entirely fair, but Helmut Marko knows exactly what I mean. And back then, Dietrich Mateschitz already wanted to get rid of Horner because he didn’t consider him loyal.“

”That’s why I have to say that he’s right,“ adds Schumacher, ”but [it’s] a bit of dirty laundry that he could have prevented himself.” However, this does not change the general opinion of Christian Horner.
“When you walk through the paddock, you have to be honest, and this isn’t just my opinion, he has very few friends because of the way he is,” says Schumacher. “I can only recommend that he stick to gardening because he has already left a lasting impression on Formula 1.”

Second brand after KTM: Honda tests 850cc MotoGP engine for 2027 for the first time

Honda follows KTM and tests the MotoGP prototype for 2027 for the first time – Work begins in Sepang (Malaysia) with the new 850cc engine and Pirelli tires

Honda is the second manufacturer after KTM to test the new MotoGP prototype for 2027 on the racetrack. At the beginning of December, KTM completed the first rollout of the new 850cc engine with test rider Pol Espargaro in Jerez.

Now it’s Honda’s turn. As Motorsport.com Spain has learned, Honda will conduct two private test days on Wednesday and Thursday.

The Tokyo-based factory’s test and development team will travel to the Sepang International Circuit in Malaysia for this purpose. It is the last test of the 2025 calendar year. On these two test days, Honda will put a motorcycle with the 2027 engine on the track for the first time. The rollout will be carried out by test rider Takaaki Nakagami. As is well known, the new technical regulations will come into force in the premier class in 2027. It stipulates engines with a displacement of 850 cubic centimeters, a reduction in aerodynamics, and the elimination of ride height systems. Above all, however, it brings with it another decisive innovation: the entry of Pirelli as the exclusive tire supplier in MotoGP, replacing Michelin. The French brand will take over the Superbike World Championship in 2027. Although Honda continues to work intensively on the development of the 2026 motorcycle, with test rider Aleix Espargaro at the helm of this project, Honda is simultaneously launching a second development strand.

The new 850cc engine will be used in a base motorcycle equipped with the tires that Pirelli is working on for its MotoGP debut in 2027. For the time being, Nakagami will take on the role of developing the new motorcycle for 2027.

Aleix Espargaro will continue to focus on the motorcycle for the coming season. At the midpoint of the 2026 season, the Spaniard will then take over the leadership of the 2027 project, when the new motorcycle will already be significantly more advanced.

It is assumed that the upcoming rollout in Sepang will use the 2026 version of the bike, with reduced aerodynamics and without the ride height system, and equipped with Pirelli tires.

Pirelli has offered both tire compounds and support staff to teams that want to start testing and working on the new tires early. So far, KTM and Honda have accepted the offer. Other manufacturers are expected to follow in February.

As previously reported, the Italian tire manufacturer also hopes to conduct two tests with the 2027 motorcycles and the regular riders in 2026: one in June and another in September.

In addition to Honda’s test team, the Japanese manufacturer’s WorldSBK team will also be working in Sepang. However, no racing motorcycles may be used; instead, testing will be limited to parts and components with a test rider.

No more political games? How Red Bull is revolutionizing Formula 1

0

This year’s World Championship duel was once again decided in the final race, but the atmosphere was friendlier than in 2021 – and the Red Bull team boss had something to do with that.

As in the 2021 season, when Max Verstappen narrowly beat Mercedes driver Lewis Hamilton in the controversial final race in Abu Dhabi, the world championship title was only decided in the last race this season. But the atmosphere in the paddock was completely different from four years ago.

At that time, the relationship between Red Bull and Mercedes was hostile at times, even if Max Verstappen did not want to share this assessment unreservedly. “Well, hostile, hostile… Nobody beat each other up, did they?” grinned the four-time world champion during his Dutch media round in Abu Dhabi.

“I didn’t perceive it as hostile. Hostile is a pretty extreme word. It was just very competitive. And the fact that the two teams didn’t like each other at that point is another story. But hostile is something else.”

Regardless, Christian Horner and Toto Wolff engaged in numerous political exchanges at the time. This happened much less frequently in the duel with McLaren, even though there were still a few references to flexible wings and tire water at the end of last year and the beginning of this season, to which Zak Brown responded with a special water bottle.

Red Bull team boss: “We respect the competition”

Since the summer, this polemic has essentially disappeared. This was also evident at the press conference on Friday before the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, where McLaren boss Brown and the new Red Bull team boss Laurent Mekies appeared together.

Despite the title-deciding weekend, the atmosphere was remarkably friendly. Another indication of the change in tone was the so-called “tape gate,” after which Mekies quickly explained that Red Bull would refrain from removing Norris’ tape from the pit wall in the future.

The change seems to be at least partly attributable to Mekies, even if he himself does not want to take credit for it. “I don’t know if you can call it that [that Red Bull was at the limit] or not,” says the Frenchman. “I think we fought a very hard battle, but a fair and clean one.”

“That’s how we want to race,” he clarified. “We push to the limit, but we respect our competitors. When it comes to sporting fairness and respect for our competitors, we believe we can do both: drive at the limit and respect our competitors at the same time.”

Red Bull comeback in 2025 thanks to new strategy?

“Sport is a battle of the giants, and we are right in the middle of it and respect our competitors.” However, according to Mekies, it’s not just about dealing with rivals. The new approach also brings internal benefits. The basic idea is to allow less distraction and less noise than before.

“Let me put it this way: it’s an incredibly competitive environment, and we believe that to be competitive here, you also have to enjoy what you do,” emphasizes the successor to former team boss Horner. “We work hard, we party hard—that’s the Red Bull spirit.”

“All we’ve done is make sure that we as a group can focus on pure racing and not get too distracted by the noise around us. And that we do what we love at our core: making these cars faster on the track.”

Fewer verbal exchanges in the future?

“That’s basically it,” says the team boss. “And to focus on what we love, to push harder than anyone else and try to enjoy it at the same time.” A statement that fits well with his engineering background. Mekies takes a systematic approach and wants to focus consistently on those factors that make the car faster. Political games don’t necessarily fit into this concept, which is why they now seem to play a lesser role at Red Bull than they used to. A trend that is not limited to Red Bull.

As more and more engineers take on the role of team principal, public polemics seem to be decreasing overall. Toto Wolff joked in Zandvoort that Formula 1 still needs “assholes” as team principals for entertainment, but the verbal exchanges were significantly less prevalent in the second half of the 2025 season than in previous years.

Toto Wolff: McLaren title with Mercedes engine no cause for celebration!

Toto Wolff cannot rejoice that McLaren has become world champion with a Mercedes engine: the factory team has priority

Mercedes motorsport boss Toto Wolff does not see much cause for celebration in the fact that McLaren, one of his customer teams, has become Formula 1 drivers’ and constructors’ world champion, even though this also means Mercedes has won a title. Nevertheless, he concedes that his engine team has reason to celebrate this success.

McLaren has been racing with Mercedes engines from HPP (High Performance Powertrains) since 2021 and became constructors’ world champions in 2024 with their powertrains. In 2025, they repeated the feat and also clinched the drivers’ title with Lando Norris.

But for Wolff, that’s just a side note: “HPP’s raison d’être is to win world championships with the works team – that’s Mercedes,” he clarifies in the Beyond the Grid podcast. But: “To ensure economic efficiency and to be able to use the power unit as a test bench and for comparison with the works team, it’s good that we supply customer teams,” he knows. And if a customer team wins the world championship with the engines, then that should also be recognized. “There will always be a part of [engine chief] Hywel [Thomas] and also of HPP that can be happy when their power unit has won a championship,” says Wolff.

However, his view as the person responsible for the works team is different: if the engine is good enough to win a world championship, then the car was not good enough to beat McLaren. “That’s the simple fact,” says the Austrian.

The aim is to change this shortcoming again in 2026 so that the Silver Arrows can once more reap the trophies themselves—and not the customer teams, which are important for reference, faster development, and better solutions, as Wolff emphasizes.

“But we are here because Mercedes gives us the opportunity to decorate the most important showcase—so that the works team wins,” he says. Because: “No one else is interested in any kind of customer success outside our little microcosm.”

“What counts is the Mercedes team,” says Wolff. “And then there’s the McLaren team. And then there’s the Williams team. And we always keep that in mind.”

ATP introduces heat protection rule

The rule defines clear thresholds for cooling breaks and match interruptions.

Following growing criticism from tennis pros, the ATP is introducing a mandatory heat protection rule starting in the 2026 season. The men’s organization announced this on Monday evening. The ATP is thus aligning itself with the guidelines of the WTA, which introduced such measures years ago. The new heat rule offers “a structured, medically supported approach to dealing with extreme heat, with the aim of protecting the health of players,” according to a statement. The new regulation is based on the Wet Bulb Globe Temperature (WBGT) index, which takes into account temperature, humidity, and other factors. The rule defines clear thresholds for cooling breaks and match interruptions. According to the rule, professionals can request a ten-minute cooling break after the second set of a three-set match if the WBGT value reaches 30.1 degrees or more. If the WBGT value exceeds 32.2 degrees, the match is interrupted.

In October, Denmark’s Holger Rune, among others, complained about “brutal” conditions in Shanghai. “Do you want a player to die on the court?” Rune asked an official at temperatures above 30 degrees Celsius and humidity of more than 80 percent.

The measure is also intended to improve conditions for spectators, officials, ball kids, and tournament staff. The four Grand Slam tournaments will retain their own guidelines.
